Abstract
The article presents ideas regarding the explanation of grammar in the process of teaching
Polish as a foreign language. The author focuses on problems such as: the place and role of
grammar in teaching foreign languages including Polish as a foreign language; selection and
analysis of language material for explanation; the manner of presenting grammar; the use
of grammar commentary; using one’s mother tongue and foreign language of the learners
to explain grammar; as well as referring to one’s mother tongue in order to facilitate the
understanding of a given topic. The entire article is enriched with numerous examples
from pedagogical practices as well as a list of topics from Polish grammar that after proper
presentation should not be problematic for those learning Polish as a foreign language.
